베리칩은 문자적 해석을 취해도 짐승의 표가 아니다
베리칩 종말론자들은 표에 대한 상징적 해석을 배격한다.
그들은 문자적 해석을 취한다.
그 결과로 베리칩이 666표가 되어버렸다.
그러나 문자적으로 해석하더라도 베리칩은 666표가 전혀 될 수 없다.
아니, 문자적 해석을 따르면 오히려
베리칩은 짐승의 표가 아니라는 사실이 더더욱 입증될 뿐이다.
계 13:16 그가 모든 자 곧 작은 자나 큰 자나 부자나 가난한 자나
자유인이나 종들에게 그 오른손에나 이마에 표를 받게 하고
이 구절을 NIV와 NASB는 아래와 같이 번역했다.
“a mark on their right hand or on their forehead”
KJV은 다음과 같이 번역하였다.
“a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads”
‘in’이 맞나, ‘on’이 맞나? 어느 쪽이 원어의 뜻과 일치할까?
여기에서 전치사는
‘in’이 아니라 ‘on’이 사용되어야 옳다.
‘on’이 원문이 의미하는 바를 정확히 전달하는 바른 번역이기 때문이다.
헬라어 성경과 원어사전으로 확인해 보자.
χαραγμα επι τη? χειρο? αυτων τη? δεξια? η επι των μετωπων αυτων
헬라어 원문에서 이 전치사는 επι(epi)로서 영어로 “on/upon”에 해당한다.

그러므로 이 구절은 다음과 같이 번역해야 원문에 충실한 번역이 된다.
“오른손이나 이마 위에 표를 받게 하고”
“오른손이나 이마 위로 표를 받게 하고”
따라서 문자적으로 해석하면 이 표는 결코
베리칩처럼 피부 속에 (속으로) 들어가는 어떤 물체나 물질이 아니다.
이러한 사실을 확고히 하기 위해 헬라어 성경에서 전치사 επι(epi)가
‘위에’(on/upon)라는 의미로 사용된 구절을 하나 더 확인해보자.
마 5:15 사람이 등불을 켜서 말 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니
이러므로 집 안 모든 사람에게 비취느니라

이 구절 가운데 “등경 위에”라는 문구에서 ‘위에’라는 전치사가 바로 επι(epi)이다.

그러므로 상징적 해석을 배격하면서,
문자적 해석을 취한 결과 베리칩은 짐승의 표가 틀림없다는
베리칩 종말론자들의 주장은 자가당착이다.
모순도 이런 모순이 없다.
문자적 해석을 충실히 따르면 ‘짐승의 표’는
인체 속에 (in) 들어가는 물건이 될 수 없기 때문이다.
전치사 επι(epi)는 ‘위에’(on/upon)라는 뜻으로 사용된 것이니
당연히 그렇게 간주되어야 옳다.
오, 형제여! 속지 말라!
문자적으로 해석을 해도 베리칩은 전혀 짐승의 표가 될 수 없다.
아니, 문자적 해석을 취하면 도리어
베리칩은 짐승의 표가 아니라는 사실이 더욱 분명하게 입증될 뿐이다.
그들은 예언이 실제로 의도하는 바를 오해하고 있는 것이다.
그것은 당연하다.
‘짐승의 정체’를 모르는 자들이 ‘짐승의 표’가 무엇인지 어찌 알겠는가?
‘짐승의 표’를 논하기 전에 먼저 ‘짐승의 정체’부터 바로 알아야 한다.
매매를 가능하게 하는 수단이 된다고 베리칩을 짐승의 표라고 주장하는 것은
진짜 짐승의 정체가 무엇인지 모르는 자들의 단견이다. 그들은 한 때 바코드가 짐승의 표라고 했다.
게다가 헬라어로 ‘표’는 χαραγμα(charagma)로서
stamp, impress 또는 sculpture; engraving, a stamp, sign을 뜻한다.

그러므로 헬라 원어성경에 따르자면 이 표는
손이나 이마 위에 (위로) 가해지는 어떤 표시를 의미하며,
피부 속으로 이식되는 칩이 될 수는 전혀 없다.
베리칩이 짐승의 표라는 미래주의자들(세대주의자들)의 교설은
흥미를 자극하지만
성경 원전이 의도하는 것과는 완전히 다른 판타지 소설같은 이론이다.
