The Errors of Calvinism (1): Introduction & Background

하워드 A. 반즈

In recent years there has been an upsurge in Calvinist (or Reformed) teaching among evangelicals in the USA, with Southern Baptists and Charismatics being to the fore, (Collin Hansen, Young, Restless, Reformed: A Journalist’s Journey with the New Calvinists, 2008, Crossway Publishers, Wheaton, IL). At the same time there has been a robust reaction against this teaching. However, this response sometimes disagrees with doctrines which have been “most surely believed among us” in assemblies, which are based, we believe, on “the whole counsel of God,” (Acts 20:27 RV). Given these circumstances, we shall be examining the teachings of Calvinism in a series of seven articles, seeking to compare and contrast them with what has been traditionally taught in assemblies for nearly two centuries. Other current doctrines, which diverge from the conventional position, such as corporate election, will be critically examined.

What is Calvinism?

Calvinism is a form of systematic theology worked out by the French reformer John Calvin (1509?1564) and later expanded by his followers. Calvin was a great devotee of Augustine of Hippo (354?430) who had himself worked out the equivalent rational theological system which highlighted the sovereignty of God, setting aside human responsibility as of any consequence in the matter of salvation. (It is the very same Augustine and Calvin whom we have also to thank for spiritualizing away an earthly millennium, teaching that there was no future for the nation of Israel).

The Problem Exemplified

If any readers are wondering what the furor is all about, they only have to read one of Calvin’s own statements:

“All things being at God’s disposal, and the decision of salvation or death belonging to Him, He orders all things by His counsel and decree in such a manner, that some men are born devoted from the womb to certain death, that His name may be glorified in their destruction” (John Allen, ed., Institutes of the Christian Religion. Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia, 1841, p. 169).

Then, no doubt, they will quickly reach for their Bibles to turn up their favorite gospel verses which contradict such unscriptural teaching!

Arminianism and “TULIP”

Calvin’s teaching was generally well received by the Reformed churches in the Netherlands, but it was strongly opposed there by a prominent theologian called James (Jacobus) Arminius (1560?1609). His arguments were centered mainly on human responsibility. Shortly after his death, his followers issued a summary of his teaching in five statements (The Five Articles of Remonstrance, 1610), which, for our purposes, we can simplify as:

(1) election was determined by the faith of the believer, which God foreknew;

(2) the atonement, while adequate for all men, is efficacious only for believers;

(3) unaided by the Holy Spirit, no person is able to respond to God’s will;

(4) grace is not irresistible;

(5) believers can fall from grace and lose their salvation.

(1) 택함은 하나님의 예지하셨던 것에 신자의 믿음에 의해 결정되었다;

(2) 속죄는 모든 사람들에게 동시에 충분하며 신자들에 대해서만 효과가 있다;

(3) 성령에 의한 도움이 없이는, 어떤 사람도 하나님의 뜻에 응답 할 수 없다;

_Remonstrance).

To counter the spread of the teaching of Arminius, the Synod of Dort (Dordrecht, Holland) was convened by the Dutch Reformed churches in 1618. The outcome was The Decision of the Synod of Dort on the Five Main Points of Doctrine in Dispute in the Netherlands, commonly known as the Canons of Dort, conveniently summarized some time later in English (following re-arrangement of the order) by the acronym/mnemonic “TULIP.” This five-point statement has served as a summary of Calvinism (or the so-called Reformed position) ever since. It spells out:

T - Total depravity

U - Unconditional election

L - Limited atonement

I - Irresistible grace

P - Perseverance of saints

In succeeding articles we will use these points to construct a critique of Calvinism.

Arminianism and Calvinism

Arminianism flourished alongside Calvinism and the two often became ? and still are ? the reason for considerable disputes among Christians. One outstanding example of this is the rift that occurred within early Methodism. This movement polarized into two groups under the respective leadership of John Wesley (1703?1791) and George Whitefield (1714? 1770); the former being an Arminian and the latter a Calvinist ? hence Wesleyan and Calvinistic Methodists. Both were active in preaching in the UK and North America. (The well-known preachers Jonathan Edwards (1703?1758) of North America and Howell Harris (1714?1773) of Wales, were close associates of Whitefield.) The present writer well remembers his own boyhood in Wales, with English and Welsh language variants of both kinds of Methodist chapels.

A Balanced View

The generally accepted view in assemblies has been that divine sovereignty and human responsibility coexist, however illogical this might seem to our limited human minds. A summary of the outcome of such an interpretation might be stated as:

? Unsaved people are spiritually dead, but still responsible/able to repent;

? Our election is personal and not just dependent on God knowing about our faith beforehand;

? The death of Christ was on behalf of all, but is only effective for believers;

? Men are dependent on, but can refuse, the striving of the Spirit in the gospel;

? Once a person is truly saved, he can never be lost.

? 구원받지 않은 사람들은 영적으로 죽었지만, 여전히 책임/회개 할 수 있다;

? 우리의 택함은 사전에 우리의 믿음에 관해 개인과 하나님을 아는 것에 바로 의존하지 않는다;

? 그리스도의 죽음은 모두를 대신했지만 신자에 대해서만 유효하다;

? 사람들은 의지하지만 복음 안에서 성령의 노력을 거부 할 수 있다;

Conclusion

In terms of the continuing war of words between Calvinists and Arminians, “there is nothing new under the sun” in the arguments they use, but it is nevertheless well worthwhile restating the assembly position on this matter. One thing is clear - the prayers in the prayer meeting before the gospel meeting usually highlight divine sovereignty, asking that God would work in the hearts and minds of the unsaved, while the gospel preaching itself emphasizes the responsibility of the sinner to repent and believe.

The Errors of Calvinism(2): Total Depravity

하워드 A. 반즈

On the face of it, the Calvinistic doctrine of total depravity sounds quite convincing: it seems to say that man could not be any worse. This has Scriptural support, as David said: “I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psa 51:5), and Paul later added “as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Rom 5:12). Man is spiritually dead; in darkness and at a distance from God. Can we ask, “Are all men and women, without distinction, able to respond to the gospel message?”

Based on this doctrine of total depravity, Calvinistic orthodoxy’s answer to the question is “No! Adam’s offspring are born with sinful natures; they do not have the ability to choose spiritual good over evil” [Thomas Steele, Five Points of Calvinism, Presbyterian and Reformed, Phillipsburg, 1963, p. 25]. This includes choosing Christ for salvation. This teaching goes on to say that only the elect are enabled by God to carry out the gospel commands to repent; believe; receive Christ; obey the gospel, etc., when they hear the gospel preached. But we might ask, “Does human responsibility have no part at all to play in the gospel?”

Human responsibility and the gospel

This subject is best understood when we examine the following opposite choices in the context of the gospel: obedience and disobedience; reception (or acceptance) and rejection. All of these are, one way or another, the obvious expressions of the human will.

Let us look first at the words allied with obedience. We first find the thought in the Acts of the Apostles, where God’s gift of the Holy Spirit is promised “to them that obey Him” (Acts 5:32). Such obedience was shown when “a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith” (Acts 6:7). However, the use of this idea comes out most clearly in Paul’s great masterpiece of evangelical explanation, the epistle to the Romans. He starts by saying that his apostleship was for “obedience to the faith among all nations” (Rom 1:5; cp 15:18). Then he spoke about those who “do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation, and wrath” (Rom 2:8). Then he points out that it was originally “by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners” (Rom 5:19), but having received the gospel, the Roman believers “have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you” (Rom 6:17). However, with regard to those Jews who had heard the gospel, “they have not all obeyed the gospel” (Rom 10:16). Indeed, it was the (largely Gentile) Roman believers’ obedience that all had heard about (Rom 16:19). Paul ends his use of this word with a statement of God’s presently revealed purposes in the gospel: “made known to all nations for the obedience of faith” (Rom 16:26).

Equally, disobedience is an act of volition, and this is the root of the problem, as Paul wrote of Adam, “As by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners” (Rom 5:19), and also of Israel, who were “a disobedient … people” (Rom 10:21). Not so, of course, for Paul who said to Agrippa, “I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19). He looked back with the Ephesian believers and said they were then, as unbelievers are now, “the children of disobedience” (Eph 2:2). In fact, this would bring “the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience” (Eph 5:6; see also Col 3:6).

Again, acceptance is an act of choice, as we read in the first chapter of John’s gospel; “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God” (v12; cp Col 2:6). On the other hand, it is also clear that sinners can reject the gospel, with equal responsibility. In His lifetime there were those who rejected the Lord Jesus Christ, particularly the national Jewish leaders, since He was “the stone which the builders rejected,” (Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10). This was to the extent of wanting to kill Him, “Who was rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes” (Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22). In fact He was “rejected of this generation” (Luke 17:25). This would lead to Him being their Judge since “he that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My words, hath One that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48).

Paul reminds Titus that before being saved, “we ourselves also were … disobedient” (Titus 3:3). Then Peter spoke of those who rejected Christ as “them which be disobedient” (1Peter 2:7, 8), just like those who rejected God’s witness before the flood, “which … were disobedient” (1Peter 3:20). Human responsibility in the Old Testament often came down to the exercise of individual choice (Deut 30:19; Josh 24:15).

(We could also have examined more examples of human responsibility, such as believing and not believing, in John chapter 3.)

From the plain statements of Scripture (read without overlaying it with any Calvinistic presuppositions) we see that man is certainly responsible in the context of the gospel. So when God commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30), He really means it, because He is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2Peter 3:9)! Thus God’s Word ends by saying, “He who is willing — let him take the water of life freely” (Rev 22:17 YLT).

Of course, we are not saying that people are able to respond to the gospel independently of God working in their lives – but more of this later when we examine the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation.

Errors of Calvinism(3): Unconditional Election

하워드 A. 반즈

Anyone reading the New Testament cannot escape the conclusion that God has elected (chosen) certain persons and predestined (predetermined) them for eternal blessing. The thorny question is, “How and why did He choose them?” Did it depend on Him alone, or only on the gospel decision of the people concerned, which, of course, He knew about beforehand anyway? If it depended on God alone, the election (choice) is called “unconditional,” but if it actually depended on the faith of the individuals concerned, it is called “conditional.” Arminius’s argument was the latter, i.e., that God chose those whom He knew beforehand would choose Christ. This was meant to counter Calvin’s earlier contention that men being dead were unable of themselves to choose Christ. So in effect Calvin said, God chose the believers, then they – and only they – could choose Christ as Savior.

In the previous article we showed that man is a responsible creature – indeed the sovereign God chose to make man so! Thus, man could choose Christ, but would he choose Christ? Of course God knew who would be saved, but did this prior knowledge determine His choice?

Do we, in trying to understand the basis of election, have to make our selection between God choosing because man could not, and man choosing because he could? We argue here that such a choice is unnecessary and that both divine sovereignty and human responsibility coexist even though they are irreconcilable to our finite, human minds. So we can say, God chose the elect, and all who hear the gospel can choose to be saved.

God the Father had blessed Paul and the Ephesian believers “with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places,” just as He had chosen them out of the mass of humanity for Himself (Eph 1:3). Paul is writing in the first place about the Ephesians and himself as individuals. God had chosen them in Christ, just as all His dealing in grace had, and always will be, “in Him.” In the same way He would also head up all things “in Him” in millennial days (see Eph 1:10). The latter verse shows us that the expression “in Him” is not exhausted by thoughts of the membership of the church which is His body, as those who favor corporate election claim.

In the same way, Paul wrote to the Thessalonian believers saying that he, Silas, and Timothy, “give thanks alway to God for you … because God hath … chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: whereunto He called you by our gospel” (2Thes 2:13, 14). Here we find divine sovereignty and human responsibility brought together, but not apologized for or explained! We also see how God works out His eternal purposes in time through the work of the Holy Spirit - God chose, the Holy Spirit set apart, and the Thessalonians believed the truth of the gospel. Paul, Silas, and Timothy had already given “thanks to God always for you all … knowing … your election of God” (1Thes 1:2-4). They knew about the election of the believers in Thessalonica by their clear conversion, when they, at great expense to themselves, had “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1Thes 1:9, see also 2Peter 1:10). James also brings the two thoughts together: “Has not God chosen the poor as to the world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which He has promised to them that love Him?” (James 2:5, Darby).

We read about God’s elect in Romans 8:33, Colossians 3:12, and Titus 1:1. Individuals are said to be elect, as the lady in 2 John 1 and her sister in 2 John 13, as well as Rufus in Romans 16:13. The Jewish believing remnant today are elect, (Romans 11:5, 7, 28) as are the tribulation saints of a future day (Matt 22:14; 24:22, 24, 31; Mark 13:20, 22, 27; Luke 18:7). We also note those believers stated to be with the Lamb in Revelation 17:14 are “called, and chosen, and faithful.” We see an interesting point raised by Paul about his endurance of suffering “for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation” (2Tim 2:10). Lastly, we note in Acts 13:48 that in Antioch and Pisidia when “the Gentiles heard … [the gospel] … as many as were ordained [appointed] to eternal life believed.” (There have been attempts to translate the word “ordained” as “disposed,” and to make it a reflexive verb, but the author has yet to find a reliable translation or major concordance which does not say “ordained” or “appointed.” See Romans 13:1 for the same word.)

Foreknowledge

Is election determined by foreknowledge? Did God just choose those whom He knew would believe? Peter addresses his readers as “strangers … elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ” (1Peter 1:1, 2; 2:9). Their election is according to God’s foreknowledge, that is to say, “perfectly consistent with” His foreknowledge, His understanding being infinite (Psa 147:5; see also Acts 15:18). Likewise, elsewhere, we read of foreknowledge in the context of predestination (Rom 8:29, 30; Eph 1:5, 11).

Conclusion

God has elected (chosen) certain people and destined them for eternal blessing, all according to His purpose. This did not depend on anything that those individuals did, or on God knowing anything about them beforehand, thus, election is unconditional. As the Scofield Reference Bible says (note at 1Peter 1:2): “Election is … the sovereign act of God in grace whereby certain are chosen from among mankind for Himself.” “I have chosen you out of the world” (John 15:19).

Errors of Calvinism(4): Limited Atonement

하워드 A. 반즈

The doctrine of Limited Atonement – that Christ only died for the elect – is, of all Calvinistic doctrines, the one that creates most offense among non-Calvinistic, evangelical Christians. This month we will show that Christ did actually die for all in order that all might be saved. However, at the same time, we will stress that Christ died instead of believers only. If Christ died instead of those (as a substitute) who die in their sins, God would be punishing their sins twice, since such unbelievers will suffer for their sins in hell.

Christ died for all

That Christ died for all is substantiated by John’s statement that “Jesus Christ the righteous … is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1John 2:1, 2). Propitiation is, of course, the New Testament equivalent of the Old Testament atonement. In Old Testament times, the mercy seat was sprinkled with blood on the Day of Atonement (see Leviticus 16), so that God could forgive the sins of the nation of Israel and continue with them for another year – the sprinkled blood being the righteous basis for God’s forgiveness. Thomas Newberry’s New Testament (Samuel Bagster, London, 1870, read online at www.archive.org) invariably gives “mercy seat” as the marginal rendering of “propitiation.” So too, on the cross, the Lord Jesus shed His precious blood so that there could be a righteous basis for God to be able to forgive the sins of the whole world.

Paul stresses to Timothy the urgency of prayer, particularly for the gospel, because our Savior God “desires that all men should be saved” (1Tim 2:4 DBY). This is possible because “the man Christ Jesus … gave Himself a ransom for all” (1Tim 2:5, 6). Once again, Christ died for all, so that they could be saved.

The difference between “for” and “instead of”

We shall now look at three seminal treatments of this issue. First, in a supplementary note in his well-known Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, W.E. Vine says, commenting on the Greek prepositions anti and huper, “Of special doctrinal importance are Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45, ‘to give His life a ransom for (anti) many.’” Here the substitutionary significance “instead of,” is clear, as also with the compound antulutron in 1 Timothy 2:6, “Who gave Himself a ransom for (huper) all.” Here the use of huper, “on behalf of” is noticeable. Christ gave Himself as a ransom (of a substitutionary character), not instead of all men, but on behalf of all. The actual substitution, as in the passages in Matthew and Mark, is expressed by the anti (instead of) many. The unrepentant man should not be told that Christ is his substitute; for, in that case, the exchange would hold good for him and though unregenerate he would not be in the place of death, a condition in which, however, he exists while unconverted. Accordingly, the many are those who, through faith, are delivered from that condition.

David West of England also showed the importance of the Greek words huper and anti with respect to the doctrine of substitution. He comes to the same conclusion as W. E. Vine, that: “It is a blessed truth that ‘Christ Jesus … gave Himself a ransom for all’ (1Tim 2:5, 6); He died to open up the way to heaven for the ‘whosoever will.’” Christ’s death has provided a righteous basis upon which God may offer salvation to all. However, if we say that Christ bore the sins of all, we are overstepping the boundaries of Scripture. If Christ bore the sins of all in general, then for what will the lost be judged at the great white throne? Revelation 20:12 clearly teaches “the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” The apostles never preached to the unsaved that “Your sins have been borne by Christ.” However, Peter, writing to fellow believers could say, “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree” (1Peter 2:24). (See the chapter on substitution in the Glory of His Grace, published in 2006 by Assembly Testimony, Belfast, and downloadable from the Assembly Testimony website.)

Lastly, we note the comments of Jim Baker of Scotland in this magazine (see “Great Gospel Themes – Atonement,” Truth and Tidings, Nov 2000). “A failure to distinguish between these two important Scriptural truths has resulted in doctrinal misunderstanding of the atoning work of Christ. As we have considered, ‘propitiation’ is the sacrificial work of Christ Godward. There is no limitation whatever here. There was sufficient atoning value in the sacrifice of Christ at Calvary to meet the need of all, and also to meet every effect of the fall. Thus we read, ‘And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world’” (1John 2:2). It is therefore quite unscriptural to teach a limited atonement. Substitution is the sacrificial work of Christ inward. In strict accuracy, only the believer can say “He took my place” (1Cor 15:3-4). Substitution is a truth for the saint to enjoy, and propitiation is a truth for the saint to declare to the sinner.

Conclusion

If Christ had not died for all, then all could not be saved, for the sacrificial work of Christ on the cross is the only means of salvation. Of course, His work only becomes effective for the unsaved when they believe. So we can happily make the bona fide statement to all unbelievers that Christ died on their behalf, (2Cor 5:14), and that they can be saved. At the same time we, as believers, can enjoy the truth that Christ died instead of us, as our substitute on the cross.

Errors of Calvinism(5): Irresistible Grace

하워드 A. 반즈

Calvinists claim that the Holy Spirit only works on the hearts of the elect and that His urgings cannot be refused, hence the term, “irresistible grace.” Once again, for them, divine sovereignty overrules human responsibility. However, our thesis is that they coexist, and here we shall show that certainly God (in the person of the Holy Spirit) must be at work for anyone to be saved, but at the same time, individuals are commanded to change their minds, i.e., repent.

The work of the Holy Spirit in salvation

The Lord Jesus promised His disciples in John 16:8 that the Holy Spirit would come to reprove the world of [i.e., about] sin, righteousness, and judgment: the same world that “God so loved” (John 3:16), and the same world into which God sent His Son “that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17). So what does it mean that the Holy Spirit would reprove the world (not just the elect) about sin, righteousness, and judgment? This point is so important that it is well worth spending some time considering the breadth of meaning of the word. The relevant Greek word is elegchos which literally means “to bring to light.” Among the possibilities offered for its English rendering are from Strong (Concordance with Hebrew and Greek Lexicon): “convict, convince, tell a fault, rebuke, reprove.” From J. N. Darby (New Translation): “to bring demonstration”; the English Revised Version “convict”; Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset, and David Brown (Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible, 1871): “convince” (note our English word convict comes from the Latin word “convincere” which literally means to convince), while other renderings include “to expose.”

Marvin Vincent (1834 – 1922) expanded the meaning to “will convict [the world] of ignorance of their real nature” (Word Studies on the New Testament, Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, 1946), whilst Fritz Rienecker (1897 – 1965) helpfully gave his expansion as “a rebuke that seeks to prove with demonstrative evidence” (A Linguistic Key to the Greek New Testament, Zondervan, Grand Rapids, 1980). Another has noted that “the word rendered ‘reprove’ in the AV [is] rather difficult to render satisfactorily in English, (so full of meaning is it),” but it contains “the conception of authoritative examination, unquestionable proof, decisive judgment.” Last we note that B. F. Westcott (1825 – 1901), former Regius Professorship of Divinity, Cambridge UK, wrote that: “It involves the conceptions of authoritative examination, of unquestionable proof, of decisive judgment, and of punitive power. He who ‘convicts’ another places the truth in a clear light before him, so that it must be seen and acknowledged as truth … He who then rejects … rejects it with his eyes open and at his peril,” (The Gospel according to St. John, Grand Rapids, Michigan: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1971, p. 228).

In summary we can say that “reprove” covers the idea of providing sufficient and convincing proof of the reality, truth, and seriousness of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Without such proof sinners cannot and will not repent, but once they have it, they are obliged to repent. The question then is, “Are those to whom the Holy Spirit speaks able to refuse His evidence?” Stephen told the Sanhedrin “Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost” (Acts 7:51). The verb “resist,” as explained by Vincent (Word Studies), is “a very strong expression implying active resistance.” Here then is one example of willful, strong resistance to the work of the Holy Spirit.

When such sufficient evidence of the Holy Spirit is refused, surely this is blaspheming (evil speaking) against the Holy Spirit (Matt 12:31), and insulting Him (Heb 10:29). If this persists, the person involved will not be saved. Even in prediluvian days, we have God saying, “My Spirit shall not always strive [plead, JND] with man” (Gen 6:3). This implies that even in those wicked days the Holy Spirit was active in giving men the necessary evidence for them to repent, through the walk and witness of Enoch and Noah (1Peter 3:19; 2Peter 2:5–9; Jude 14).

This work of the Holy Spirit means that those who hear the gospel have divine witness as to its truth, in writing in the Word of God, and in their conscience by the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, although man generally is spiritually dead, hearers of the gospel are given sufficient evidence by the Holy Spirit to see the truth of these weighty matters. If we leave the Holy Spirit out of the equation, then we cannot find any solution to man’s responsibility exercised in the gospel; once we understand His work, we see possibilities that otherwise are absent.

The Gospel Call

The gospel call is “God’s authoritative invitation,” wrote F. F. Bruce (The Epistle to the Ephesians, Pickering and Inglis, London, 1961). It is the same F. F. Bruce who wrote that C. H. Spurgeon, the greatest English Calvinist of the 19th century, is said to have prayed more than once, “Lord, hasten to bring in all Thine elect, and then elect some more.”(Answers to Questions, p. 198, Paternoster Press, Exeter, 1972). Along with the bona fide proclamation of the gospel for all, the Holy Spirit is active in hearers hearts, giving them all the proof they could ever ask for as to its truth. They are then responsible to repent (change their minds) and believe the gospel.

Of course, it is important when trying to understand the work of the Holy Spirit, to bear in mind what the Lord Jesus told Nicodemus: “The wind bloweth where it listeth [i.e., wants to] …. so is every one that is born of the Spirit (John 3:8). That is to say, since in Hebrew the words “spirit” and “wind” are the same, the Holy Spirit works in salvation when and where He desires and chooses, and not as we expect or understand.

Errors of Calvinism(6): Perseverance of Saints

하워드 A. 반즈

If the statement in the title is only what it appears to say, i.e., “once saved always saved,” then we could have no argument with it, for according to the Scriptures, once a person is truly saved, then they can never be lost again. However, in many Calvinists’ minds it can mean the very opposite, so they say you can only be sure that you are saved if you persevere! But first, we need to be sure about eternal security.

The believer’s eternal security

The simplest and most striking statement about eternal security was made by the Lord Jesus Himself, Who said “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand” (John 10:27-29). Then the promises of the Bible, in John’s writings for instance, about the connection between a believer’s faith in the Lord Jesus and the certainty and possession of eternal life, are obviously irreversible. “He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24); “He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47); “He hath promised us ... eternal life” (1John 2:25); and “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1John 5:12). See also John 3:16, 36. If the life spoken about is really everlasting, how can we ever be lost?

Look at the following selected statements made by Paul, Peter, and John about what God has already done for Christians: “sealed us” (2Cor 1:21-22); “quickened us” (Eph 2:5); “translated us into the kingdom” (Col 1:13); “appointed us … to obtain salvation” (1Thes 5:9); “called us unto His eternal glory” (1Peter 5:10); “given to us eternal life” (1John 5:11). If it is possible to be lost again after we are saved, then every one of these promises, and many more, would have to be taken away, annulled, or reversed – this is never anticipated and clearly impossible!

God’s part in eternal security is further emphasized in such statements as He is “able to keep you without stumbling, and to set you with exultation blameless before His glory” (Jude 24 ESV), and that believers are “kept by the power of God” (1Peter 1:5). Then we read that the Lord Jesus “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Heb 7:25), being “the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him” (Heb 5:9). Notice also “having obtained eternal redemption” (Heb 9:12). So “once saved always saved!” Surely we are happy to say with Paul, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against [for] that day” (2Tim 1:12).

Antinomianism

There are those Calvinists who say that if believers are told that they can never be lost, then this allows them to lead careless lives. (The formal name for such a belief is antinomianism). When we consider the great things that God has done for believers, then “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God” (2Cor 5:17, 18). Positionally, this is immediately true upon conversion, but as we are obedient to God and His Word, this also becomes true practically. This progress might not be as continual as it should be, so that in the epistles believers have to be warned about stealing, lying, swearing, cheating, being immoral, etc. However, even carnal believers are still sons of God by faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 3:26). The parable of the prodigal son is about a person who was always a son, regardless of what he has done (Luke 15:11–24). Even those who have to be excommunicated from assembly fellowship and are under disciple are never said to be lost: they too are still sons.

Many Calvinists, because they are obsessed with the possibility of antinomianism, think that the “once saved always saved” doctrine is actually dangerous. The Charismatic Calvinist R. T. Kendall (author of Once saved, Always Saved, Moody Press, Chicago, 1983, and like Martyn Lloyd-Jones and G. Campbell Morgan minister at Westminster Chapel in London) is reported to have said that “nearly all … [17th century Calvinist teachers] went through great doubt and despair on their deathbeds as they realized their lives did not give perfect evidence that they were the elect.” Sadly, many Calvinists think the same today. They think that, effectively, at the end of the day, their salvation depends on their faithfulness. However, the Bible says that even, if we are unfaithful, He abides faithful (2Tim 2:13).

Final thoughts

The only point left to consider arises from what we said at the beginning of this article: “once a person is truly saved, then they can never be lost again.” Sadly we must realize that some people do make false professions of faith because of peer and parental pressure, as well as other reasons, so they were never truly saved at all and often later revoke their profession anyway. (This does not include those who are saved but have doubts about their salvation, for Satan is only too quick to try to rob us of our assurance (cp. Gen 3:1.) Therefore care must always be taken not to illicit false confessions of faith by human means, however well meant.

The Errors of Calvinism(7): Concluding Remarks

하워드 A. 반즈

As we have seen, we can be quite happy with some of the teachings of Calvinism, especially unconditional election and the preservation of saints - at least when properly defined! Equally, we have been clear in strongly disagreeing with other points, especially limited atonement. Of course, what we have said is not new, but it has been the generally agreed point of view in assemblies of the Lord’s people for nearly two centuries (see C.H. Mackintosh’s piece on one-sided theology at www. stempublishing.com and Sovereignty And Responsibility, by F. B. Hole at www.biblecentre.org). However, before we conclude this series, there are a few extra things to consider.

Simple illustrations of the “Balanced View”

The two great Victorian preachers, D. L. Moody and C. H. Spurgeon had quite diverse views on Calvinism. Moody was very much an anti-Calvinist, while Spurgeon has been called “the greatest English Calvinist of the 19th century” (F. F. Bruce, Answers to Questions, Paternoster Press, Exeter, 1972). Given this dichotomy, it is quite remarkable that between them they have supplied us with the simple, but helpful illustrations we often hear quoted about the fact that divine sovereignty and human responsibility happily coexist. Moody used to illustrate the point by saying, “On a beautiful mansion, above the portico on the door are the words, ‘Whosoever will may come.’ You go inside because that is what it says. ‘Whosoever will come on in.’ You come inside. You turn around and you look. Above the door on the inside is, ‘Chosen in Him before the foundation of the world.’” (Moody also used to say, “The elect are the whosoever wills and the non-elect are the whosoever won’ts!”)

In a sermon entitled “Sovereign Grace and Man’s Responsibility,” originally delivered on Sunday morning, August 1, 1858, at the Music Hall, Royal Surrey Gardens, London, Spurgeon preached “That God predestines, and that man is responsible, are two things that few can see. These two truths, I do not believe, can ever be welded into one upon any human anvil, but one they shall be in eternity: they are two lines that are so nearly parallel, that the mind that shall pursue them farthest, will never discover that they converge; but they do converge, and they will meet somewhere in eternity, close to the throne of God, whence all truth doth spring …You ask me to reconcile the two. I answer, they do not want any reconcilement; I never tried to reconcile them to myself, because I could never see a discrepancy … Both are true; no two truths can be inconsistent with each other; and what you have to do is to believe them both.”

Is faith a gift from God?

Calvinists insist that faith is a gift from God and is not part of man’s responsibility. At first sight two verses seem to support this view. First, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph 2: 8, 9). Experts in New Testament Greek, including Dean Alford, F. F. Bruce, A. T. Robertson, W. E. Vine, C. I. Scofield, Kenneth S. Wuest, Marvin R. Vincent, and many others, tell us the construction of the Greek in Ephesians 2:8-10 makes it impossible for faith to be the gift spoken of: so the phrase “it is the gift of God,” refers to the whole subject being dealt with, i.e., salvation by grace through faith, and not to faith. Secondly, Peter wrote, “to them that have obtained like precious faith with us” (2Peter 1:1). Once again it looks as if faith is a gift. However, William Kelly in his commentary on this epistle (Stempublishing.com) explains that faith here refers “to what is believed,” i.e., faith seen objectively and not subjectively. So the command is, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

브루스, A.T. 로버슨, W.E.바인, C.I.

Conclusion

We can conclude by once again quoting the words of William Kelly. In his commentary on the prophet Hosea he wrote: “The tendency of all men is to become what people call either Arminians or Calvinists; and a hard thing it is to hold the balance of truth without wavering to either side. There is nothing, however, too hard for the Lord; and the Word of God is the unfailing preservative from either one or the other. I am perfectly persuaded … that neither Arminianism nor Calvinism is in the Bible, and that they are both thoroughly wrong without even the smallest justification. The fact is, that the tendency to either is deeply seated in unrenewed minds. That is, the same man may be an Arminian at one time and a Calvinist at another and it is likely that, if he has been a violent Arminian one day, he may become a violent Calvinist tomorrow. But the roots of both lie in man and in his one-sidedness. The truth of God is in His word as the revelation of Christ by the Spirit, and nowhere else.”

Calvinism and Arminianism are both wrong because they put reason above revelation. Let us stand neither with the Calvinists and rob man of his responsibility, nor with the Arminians and rob God of His sovereignty.

We can do no better in concluding this series to quote the wise words of C. F. Hogg: “It is no small comfort to know that … the electing grace of God leads to Christ. The will of man submitted to God also leads to Christ. Some day …we will see how these two factors in the life of man meet in Christ … meanwhile, the secret of peace and effective service is to trust implicitly in, and unhesitatingly preach, the wisdom and truth of the God Who is love.” (What Saith the Scripture? Pickering and Inglis, London, 1947).
